The 2018 Australian and New Zealand Disaster and Emergency Management Conference is almost here again, this year the Conference will be held over the 21-22 May at The Star Gold Coast.

Ms Serena Yang, Manager Policy and Projects at Green Industries SA and Mr Mark Rawson, Managing Director at Rawtec both join us at the Conference to discuss ‘Disaster Waste Management Planning’.

Abstract

The management of debris following a disaster can have real and lasting impacts on affected communities and the environment. While waste planning is critical prior to disasters to enable timely, effective and sustainable waste management during the disaster response, recovery and rebuilding processes, it is not widely undertaken, globally and in Australia.

This oral presentation will talk about the staged disaster waste management project is being undertaken by Green Industries SA in South Australia. With funding support from the Australian Government Natural Disaster Resilience Program, Green Industries SA with the assistance from local and international waste experts have undertaken a two staged project on disaster waste management planning. This includes a stage one Scoping Study which completed in 2015 and a stage two development of a Disaster Waste Management Capability Plan and Guidelines to be endorsed under the South Australia’s State Emergency Management Plan which will provide clarity regarding roles and responsibilities for disaster waste management in South Australia as well as guidance on best practice.
Biography

Serena joined Green Industries SA in 2011 (formerly Zero Waste SA). With a legal background, Serena has worked in various policy development roles in trade, economic and sustainability development for State Government. Serena’s current role is focused on waste management and green industry policy development and project management in Green Industries SA. Serena has scoped and project managed the Disaster Waste Management project since its inception in 2014.

Biography

Mark Rawson is the Managing Director and Principal Consultant of Rawtec: a specialist consultancy in waste, recycling and resource management. He is also the SA Branch President of the Waste Management Association of Australia. Rawtec provides independent advice to government, manufacturing and service businesses, and the waste and recycling industry. In 2015, Mark led a project team to deliver the South Australian Scoping Study on Disaster Waste Management. Following this, Mark project directed the development of the SA Disaster Waste Management Plan and Guidelines, which will integrate roles and responsibilities for disaster waste into the SA State Emergency Management Framework.
