DFO – Essendon – Lessons Learned

The 2018 Australian and New Zealand Disaster and Emergency Management Conference is on this month over the 21-22 May at The Star Gold Coast.

Abstract
On 21 February 2017, a Beechcraft King Air B200, conducting a flight from Essendon Airport to King Island, crashed into the Essendon DFO Shopping Centre shortly after take-off. The pilot and four passengers were fatally injured and the aircraft destroyed. A number of people on the ground received minor injuries, the centre suffered extensive structural damage, along with fire and smoke damage throughout the building.

The centre houses 110 retailers and caters to approximately 2.3 million shoppers annually. The building that was impacted by the crash housed Spotlight, JB Hi-Fi and a number of smaller retailers.

This incident was a high impact, low probability event that resulted in activation of the company’s Crisis and Emergency Management System (CEMS) including Crisis Management Plan, Regional Emergency Management Plan, Centre Emergency Management Plan, People & Culture Plan and Communications Plan.

Biography

Marc is currently the Risk Manager for Crisis & Emergency Management for Vicinity Centres. Prior to joining Vicinity Centres Marc was with the Victoria Police for 28 years and retired as an A/Inspector. In 2007 and 2008 Marc was seconded to the AFP performing duties in Timor Lesté and Solomon Islands. After the Bushfires of 2009 Marc was temporarily assigned to the State Emergency Response Coordination Unit and a secondment to the OESC in the Capability Enhancement Unit as the Police Advisor. Marc is a IAEM Certified Emergency Manager, he has completed a Bachelor of Emergency Management.

Dan shares a passion for developing crisis strategies that support RiskLogic’s mandate to build the crisis leadership capabilities of executive teams to improve outcomes during a crisis. With over 20 years’ experience in risk, crisis management, business continuity and emergency management, Dan is known for being a highly competent and captivating educator, facilitator and presenter. Before starting RiskLogic, Dan was employed at companies such as Westpac and HSBC Bank. Dan holds qualifications in Business and Emergency Management. He also has extensive emergency services experience as a former fire fighter in the NSW Fire Brigade and as a senior rescue officer with the NSW State Emergency Service.
