Building A Future Volunteer Workforce

The 2018 Australian and New Zealand Disaster and Emergency Management Conference is on next week over the 21-22 May at The Star Gold Coast.

Ms Sally Baisden, Program Manager with PCYC Emergency Services Cadets joins us at the Conference to discuss ‘Building A Future Volunteer Workforce: How to Harness the Strength of The Selfie Generation’.

Abstract

The speed of life is blistering, and we need to focus on the WHY of volunteering to attract and retain skilled and passionate people to unpaid roles when their spare time is at a premium. Couple this with the demand of the sector to not only retain but increase volunteer engagement and you have an environment which commands excellence in volunteer management and community engagement.

This presentation will tell the story of how a team of two paid staff, and a group of terrific volunteers, have built an entire community around the next generation of emergency services volunteers. With details around the strategy behind the execution and the results to date in relation to volunteer engagement and building community resilience, attendees will leave enthusiastic about engaging with their own volunteer workforce.

The Emergency Services Cadets Program is the only one of its kind in Australia and New Zealand, funded by Queensland Fire & Emergency Services (QFES) and delivered by the state’s largest youth development organisation, PCYC Queensland. Through this unique partnership, the two sectors have collaborated to reframe young people in the eyes of the broader community as valuable contributors; and to provide a platform for experienced personnel to share a lifetime of knowledge and skills in a manner that will truly pay dividends to the community beyond their years of service.

Biography

Sally Baisden (Bed(Primary); B humanServ) is the Program Manager for PCYC Queensland Emergency Services Cadets and is passionate about helping others to reach their potential. Sally sees her role as the perfect challenge, demanding a balance between youth development, the emergency services sector, business management, and empowering leadership in others.
