Queensland learns from US in natural disaster planning

The Honourable Campbell Newman

Los Angeles: Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has met some of the world’s leading geological experts to investigate ways to minimise the impact of natural disasters.

Mr Newman met them during a visit to the California Institute of Technology’s US Geological Survey program.

“Unfortunately Queensland is no stranger to natural disasters. Recent floods and Cyclone Yasi have shown Queenslanders first-hand how nature can impact on our lives, our communities and our infrastructure,” Mr Newman said.

“While these terrible events are often unavoidable, we can always learn from our experience and become even better prepared.

“This government is about building a more resilient Queensland.

“Unlike Labor’s wasteful approach, we have committed $80 million to build more resilient infrastructure, rather than rebuilding the same infrastructure in the same position to see it wash away in the next flood.

“By meeting with members of the US Geological Survey program, we will gain new insights to reduce the future impacts of flooding, cyclones, tropical storms, fire and drought on Queensland communities.

“The US Geological Survey has been working on projects provide better coordination of groups such as police, SES, defence, community leaders and the public.

“Queensland is also working in these areas through initiatives such as Queensland University of Technology’s Centre for Emergency and Disaster Management, as well as James Cook University’s Centre for Disaster Studies and the Cyclone Testing Station.

“There are great opportunities for Queensland universities to partner with the California Institute of Technology to further this important research.

“This research will lead to a Queensland that is even better prepared for natural disasters.”

The Premier is currently leading a group of Queensland companies on a trade mission to promote the State’s industries in Los Angeles, New York and Houston.
